Vital.Vibrant.Visible: Local Indigenous Identity Through Portraiture is a photography project that highlights the many Indigenous people who live in our area. In light of recent debates about sports mascots and cultural appropriation, Vital.Vibrant.Visible was conceived to counteract the perpetuation of stereotypes that sustain the marginalization of Indigenous people. The project challenges the dominant narrative and brings about Indigenous-led narrative change.

Curator Rhonda Anderson is Iñupiaq - Athabaskan from Alaska. Her Native enrollment village is Kaktovik, and she currently lives in Colrain, MA. Rhonda is a Mother as well as an Herbalist, Silversmith, and activist. She works as an educator in area schools and the 5 colleges near her home. Rhonda's activism ranges from removal of mascots, lifting Indigenous issues and narratives, Water Protector, and protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from extractive industry.

Photographer, Sara Lyons is an artist and educator living in Greenfield, MA. Sara teaches visual art and photography at a public charter school and Greenfield Community College. Images from her fine art photographic series have been exhibited throughout New England. http://saraklyons.com/
